Life Drawing
I joined a three week workshop with Suzanne Young, an excellent figure/portrait artist. At the end of the session, I took some pictures of this beautiful model since I wanted to get some details that I wasn't able to see without having the photos. I guess I basically work with photos but it was a nice practice for me. The model was absolutely beautiful..she was Arabic/Basque (beautiful combination) wearing a colorful outfit.. she told me that the vest belonged to her grandmother. I give her so much credit for staying in one position for the 20 minutes at a time during the 3 hr. class. I enjoyed painting from life...a change from working from a photo...

A fantastic portrait, from the real ,Hilda!
ReplyDeleteThe artistic work, from life, has special charm!
Also I have always been impressed by the job of the models ,because stand still in one position for a short time ...
I CAN NOT!
thank you so much RITA for your kind comment. So true, standing up for such a long time is not easy for them...she was a wonderful model.
DeleteWell done!!! Painting from life is really different from painting from a photo...I'm not sure which is harder. lol I posed for my art group once and it really isn't easy to stay still for that long.
ReplyDeletethank you so much JOAN! It was really wonderful for a change. It was nice that you got the experience of modeling as well.!

ReplyDeleteHilda,
ReplyDeleteA complicated subject which you handled very nicely. I worked for years in pastels. There is nothing like the beautiful pure color. Lovely!

DeleteI love the painting, Hilda! What great colors!
ReplyDeletethank you JUDY!!! I used Unisom pastels to highlight the outfit. Unisoms are very vibrant. Have a good day!!
DeleteHer attire must have been tough to paint.Did you do it in one sitting? Yes life drawing is fun, but I only use pencils or charcoal for my life drawings. It must have been fun doing it with pastels- you are great with them, really!
ReplyDeletethank you ARTI for your lovely comment.! She modeled for us 3 times for 3 hours a day. I don't usually use bright colors but I thought it would be a nice change. Your use with pencils are flawless!!
DeleteThis is wonderful, Hilda! I like how you have painted the clothing of this beautiful lady. Have a good week end! Ciao.
ReplyDeletethank you so much TITO!! I appreciate your wonderful comment! enjoy your day!
DeleteWhat a fabulous job! She looks beautiful! Now I find myself wondering at the "Basque" and have to look it up. I always love learning new things. I never like drawing from life. I find I just do not work fast enough! LOL
ReplyDeletethank you SHERRY! for stopping by and commenting! I love details and I was standing pretty far back so drawing from life wasn't too easy but it was a nice change for me.
DeleteThis is done live.. WOW.. Kudos..
ReplyDeletethank you so much PRABAL!! you've made my day!!!
DeleteThat's wonderful that you had that experience. I haven't been able to do that yet, but I hope I can find some way to paint a live figure one day. I imagine it's a very different experience than painting from a photo which is what I usually do. :)
ReplyDeletethank you CAROL for stopping by and commenting! I enjoyed painting from life, however, I prefer painting from a photo. It's very different and glad to have experienced it.!
ReplyDeleteIt's been quite some time since I painted from life. It brings its' own challenges...but then again it has its' rewards! It is something you merely have to do enough of to get used to it.
ReplyDeleteGreat job, Hilda!
thank you DEAN for stopping by and for your nice comment. I think I like working with photos a bit more... I hope you have a wonderful Evening!!
ReplyDeleteHi Hilda - there is something so exhilarating about working from life - I do believe it adds to the work that is produced from photos. And I think your life painting is super wonderful! Bravo, Hilda!

ReplyDeletethank you PADMAJA!! You always seem to lift me and make me feel so good. Thank you for that lovely comment.
DeleteThis is great and I enjoyed finding the areas I know you loved doing. The silver bracelets, the satin banding on her top, the gold trim on her jackets, her earrings and the delicate headdress.
ReplyDeleteI think you did an amazing job on capturing the slight bulge of her tummy over the waistband and your cool tones in the shadow areas.
I love seeing your paintings.
You're scaring me JULIE. You know me like a book!!! I did enjoy those special areas..especially the little bulge of her tummy..that was great and I love using unisom pastels for those highlights like the one on her headdress!! thank you for that beautiful comment!!
DeleteGreat job! It is so hard drawing people from life! Beautiful colors!
ReplyDeletethank you so much KIMBERLY for that lovely comment! I'm almost finished painting a portrait of the same young lady (head shot) but this time from a photo!! Glad you stopped by!

ReplyDeletethank you BARBARA for those encouraging words. I might do this again, especially if I get a wonderful model again.! Maybe a still life next time!!!?

ReplyDeletethank you SO much Dan for that nice comment. I really appreciate you stopping by!
DeleteThat's something I have always wanted to do. Is it your first figure drawing class? I can't wait to see more. This is a beautiful painting! The face especially! wow!
ReplyDeletethank you so much KATHERINE. I took a workshop with Dan Slapo a year ago and absolutely loved him. It was a portrait class with a smaller group of Artists which was nice since it put me closer to the model. I think I'd like to do this again but hopefully I will be a bit closer to the model this time. Enjoy the rest of the night...(loved your recent painting)
