Shadia

Shadia was posing for us today at my Long Island Portrait Group.  She's a beautiful model who poses all over Long Island.  She wasn't feeling well today and yet she modeled perfectly for us.  I'm ashamed to say that I do a lot of my work through the camera.  however, I am trying my best to paint looking at the model instead of the camera...slowly but surely?  I  hope so!

  4. I think your portrait work is lovely, Hilda, and this one particularly so. By the way, I also find using the camera as a back up reference source makes me more relaxed during a portrait group session. I can take my time to really observe, rather than rushing to finish.

  6. It is so good to see you are back and that must mean, feeling better. No more surgery now, you hear!! As always I just love your skin tones. You know I don't think you have to apologize for working from the camera. I think you have the best of both worlds. You see in person and make your impressions/notes and then can take your time to finish a beautiful portrait. Bravo to you I say.

  8. Hello Hilda!:) When I used to go to life classes I took photos too, just as some of the greatest painters, dead or alive do and did. It's not a bad habit, it's a means of seeing in greater detail some of the things that normally would be missed, and you do a great job. Every time I see one of your portraits, I marvel at your expertise, and life like appearance of your models, and this is a lovely example of what the naked eye, and the camera combined can achieve.

By the way Hilda,....I must have been away too long, as you called me Debbie, and another blogger who knows my name and where I live, finished her comment by saying, to my good japonese friend in America! LOL :=)

  16. Working from life is much more difficult and I'm guilty of relying on photos, but you learn more from working directly with a model though. Well done and beautiful painting.

    1. Working from life is very difficult...well, for me it was anyway. maybe I'll leave the camera home next time... It will definitely be impressionistic!! Thank you for your lovely comment Diana! I appreciate it!!!

  17. She is another beauty, isn't she? I love it all but extra nice touches are how you did her hair curls resting on her blouse, also the gentle smile as if she was recalling a pleasant memory. Just right!
When I took life drawing/painting at the the Art Students League I had to use binoculars so I could see the details as I was so far away. Photos were not allowed.
Fast forward 20 years and I wonder if the rules still apply. Photos make so much sense for the finishing part. You cannot beat painting from life to capture the skin and hair coloring though.
Have a wonderful week and I am so happy to read that you are doing much better.

  19. Me encanta dibujar siempre en directo y veo que los que haces de figuras, te quedan muy bien. Admiro tu arte en el tema de las figuras. Para mi, es lo más difícil!
    Bravo, Hilda.
