Yosemite - once again
I painted this awhile ago but I wanted to paint it again.. not only because it was a beautiful place that I visited many times, but last time I used canson paper... this time I used sanded paper... putting all my values down first with pastels and then I applied an alcohol wash.. it came out looking like an oil painting. After it dried, I used my pastels finishing my painting as I always do. I enjoyed using the sand paper however, it eats up all my pastels.. lol

Merveilleusement beau et apaisant...
ReplyDeleteFélicitations, Hilda.
thank you so much, OLIVIER... you're so kind. I appreciate you stopping by to comment. Have a wonderful Evening.
DeleteSo you liked the base done with alcohol? Haven't tried it, and guess it could only be on sand paper due to wrinkling. It is georgous, but right now probably under feet of snow? Now sure which is my favorite, all the rock colors or the water, both are so well done. Bravo Hilda.
ReplyDeleteThank you NELVIA for stopping by to comment. Yes, as long as you use sanded paper, you apply the alcohol after you put your pastels on the paper ...brush it on like you were painting. Very cold here in NY !!
DeleteMaybe 18degrees....no snow YET!!! Enjoy the rest of the Evening!!
Beautiful Hilda! I just love all the color in your rocks and water. Wow! it's just perfect!
ReplyDeletethank you so much CATHY...I'm so glad you like this painting.. it was different for me and I really enjoyed painting it!!
DeleteFabulous closeup composition Hilda! So alcohol doesnt dissolve pastels? It does looks like an oil finish.
ReplyDeleteHi PADMAJA! I'm so glad you liked this painting... actually it does dissolve the pastels. It becomes liquid with the alcohol but the color stays on and you add the pastels again and it adds extra texture to the painting. It's a nice technique but I wouldn't do a portrait with it since you want the skin to be smooth. The paper is too rough.
DeleteIt is so interesting to read about your process, Hilda. This painting turned out so beautifully. I can almost hear the water rushing against the rocks! Great work!
ReplyDeletethank you so much for such a nice comment, DARLA...I would love to do another one soon.. Glad you stopped by!!
DeleteI think this is just gorgeous, Hilda! I too enjoyed learning of your process for this particular piece. I've only used oil pastels once and I felt like it had a crayon appearance, flecks of wax and all.
ReplyDeleteThank you SHERRY for stopping by to comment. I've never worked with oil pastels..
DeleteI understand it's very difficult to blend because of the "waxy" feel to it but I guess with any medium we use, once you get used to it ..it might be a good thing? I love regular pastels...messy but wonderful...
Hilda, I agree with Sherry " Just Gorgeous", thank you for sharing your process. You have captured the atmospheric beauty of this scene. Yes, like Darla mentioned you can almost hear the water crashing on the rocks. Well done my friend.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much JOAN for your lovely comment.! I value your opinion...Have a wonderful day... temps are going up to 49degrees!!! Life is good!!!
DeleteIt's magical and I can understand why you would want to paint this spot again. I love the color combinations and effects on the water. I find your process interesting, it is a beautiful medium and you use it with ease!
ReplyDeletethank you SO much CELIA... your comment made me smile...I appreciate you stopping by!
DeleteHave a wonderful day!
Some spots deserve to be painted again. This is really lovely. You captured the highlights of the moving water and the light on the rocks so well.
ReplyDeletethank you so much JOAN! It was such a perfect spot ...We were hiking and stopped suddenly when we seen this amazing place.
DeleteI don't think we would be able to find this spot again, so I'm glad I got a lot of reference shots.... Enjoy the day!!!
Wow! The textures and colours on those rocks is amazing! What a gorgeous scene... I would like to be sitting on one of those rocks with my sketchbook... Bliss! :0)
ReplyDeletethank you SO much SANDRA... The paper was wonderful for the textures that you need when painting the rocks.. I enjoyed painting this. Glad you liked it ...you would have done beautifully sitting on the rocks drawing this scene!!
DeleteThe textures in this painting are fabulous, Hilda! it may have eaten your pastels at a furious rate, but it was worth it - beautiful!!!

thank you KATHRYN!!! what a nice comment!! I'm glad you stopped by to comment!!!

ReplyDeleteI loved using sand paper when I was painting in pastels...the finished piece seemed so much less flimsy.
thank you so much CAROL for stopping by to comment.. You just made my day with those words...enjoy the rest of the day!!

ReplyDeletethank you SO much for your visit, JANE and for such a nice comment! I appreciate it!!
DeleteEnjoy your weekend!!!
Beautiful colors in those rocks, Hilda, along with a great composition that draws us into the painting. Use your harder pastels (Nu pastels) to do your basics and top off with your softer pastels (Rembrandt, Sennelier, Unison). It helps preserve the softer pastels and doesn't fill up the grit as fast.
ReplyDeletethank you so much PAT!!! you're right!! I used my Rembrandt's soft pastels..I should have known better!! I would like to do another landscape and I'll remember to use my nu pastels....Thank youll!! Enjoy your weekend...
DeleteWhat a beautiful scene, I love the colors of all the rocks - you did a great job of capturing the glow of the light. I wish I could go and sit there listening to the gurgle of the water and the bird singing. Heaven capatured on paper.

Oh wow Hilda, this is amazing. It does look like an oil painting and the way you finished with pastel is beautiful...those tiny little delicate marks int he water and in the grass. Gorgeous!

ReplyDeleteun abrazo!!
This is so good. The colors are very juicy and there is a great feel to it. Btw what is sanded paper??
ReplyDeleteHi Prabal, Thank you so much for stopping by to comment.! I never realized how many colors goes into rocks...Sanded paper has lots of tooth so I can apply a lot of pastels. In my case, I applied pastels (all different colors to the rock) then when I applied the alcohol all the colors blended in, holding the colors together... then you apply more pastels as always to finish your painting...it was very nice but I think I prefer regular canson paper to do my paintings...I'm glad you liked this painting!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, Hilda! I find with sanded paper I can add many layers and do a lot of scumbling which adds a glorious texture. Perfect subject matter for this technique!
ReplyDeletethank you CAROL...I did enjoy this technique with the alcohol and would love to try again...of course, on another landscape....rocks/boulders are always a good choice! Enjoy your day...
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful Hilda! I love how your eye travels through the painting. A very soothing painting and well done. Love your latest portraits also!
ReplyDeleteThank you CAROL...as you know, I do more portraits than landscape but I'm trying to do different kinds of paintings...and I really enjoyed this one...putting all the different colors in rocks was so amazing to me..
ReplyDeleteI never realized how much color goes into one rock...lol !! I'm glad you liked this one... !!!
