A few months before Hurricane Sandy hit, I went to see the Lighthouse and took some nice reference photos for this painting.
The Fire Island Lighthouse has been closed because of some damage since last October and just re-opened on Memorial Day.
The damage was minimal but Sandy heavily damaged access routes to the site. I enjoyed seeing the wildflowers while walking on the Boardwalk near the lighthouse.

Ah was just thinking of you as I am going to start, from my mouth to God's ears, a pastel this weekend and might come for advice. I am glad to hear things are recovering and the simple pleasures again can be enjoyed. Great sky work and like the beach feel in the foreground. Story telling superb Hilda.
ReplyDeletethank you NELVIA for stopping by to comment. I appreciate it. I look forward to seeing your next pastel!
DeleteWow ... oil painting!!! Hilda, it's wonderful - good format, just enough detail, And I love the sky blue color in the grasses. I am glad to hear the damage was minimal there.

DeleteHilda, this is such a beautiful place and a beautiful piece of work. I would imagine the original builders of lighthouses somehow made them super strong to withstand nature's fury. I wonder how many storms this one has seen in its lifetime?
ReplyDeletethank you SHERRY for stopping by to comment. I said the same thing to my husband...the builders did an amazing job on these lighthouses to withstand the fury of this hurricane.!

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for stopping by KIMBERLY and for your very nice comment. I enjoyed painting the lighthouse with oils for a change.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like this one!
This is such a beautiful painting Hilda and I love the sweet American flag off in the distance. The flowers are so delicate and the lighthouse so tall and straight and proud...ready to guide all who see it home.
ReplyDeleteLighthouses have always held a certain charm for me and I've toured many of them. The best one I've seen so far is Cape Hatteras in North Carolina. They actually paid millions to move it away from danger of corrosion back in 1999. The pictures of them actually moving a lighthouse were amazing!
Thank you so much LISA! I'm so glad you like this painting. I really like lighthouses as well..I've never seen the lighthouse in Cape Hatteras but will put it on my list....!! I would have loved to see them moving it!!
DeleteHilda, this is a beautiful painting. I wasn't able to do the show this year. Was in Virginia visiting my daughter. But this would be perfect for the show. Please consider doing some of the future shows. Have a beautiful day.

Hilda, gorgeous work! Great hopeful story too. A wonderful to celebrate such a beautiful landmark through your painting.
ReplyDeletethank you SO much CELIA for your generous comment. I really did enjoy painting this lighthouse! Enjoy the rest of the evening!!
DeleteHi Hilda! I took a ride over to Robert Moses Park today. The road is mostly repaired and they are working on building a dune/hill along the road because the dunes are gone. They lost most of the dunes in front of the lighthouse too and most of the dunes that were to the right of the boardwalk on the way to the lighthouse. Now you can easily see the lighthouse from the beach because there is nothing blocking the view. I would think they are going to pump sand to replace the dunes.
ReplyDeletethank you so much JOAN for the update on Fire Island! I hope they replace the sand soon and plant some ornamental grass to hold down the sand!!! It's amazing that the Lighthouse still stands...they built it strong enough to withstand the force of the wind.!! thanks again...enjoy the rest of the evening!!
DeleteNice job, Hilda.
ReplyDeletethank you SO much DIANA! You're very kind! Enjoy your day!!!!
