Tuesday Afternoon

I wish I can say that this painting was from life but this is a pastel portrait of the young lady who modeled for us at Suzanne Young's workshop.  I had taken a few photos of her for  those details that I didn't want to miss, so I used a closeup reference picture for this painting.  It was pretty warm in the workshop so she "poufed" up her hair which I loved, and took the shot before she put it down.  There was those perfect shadows on her face that "called" me as well as her beautiful flawless skin!  I truly enjoyed painting her.

  1. Reference photographs are not okay? Portraiture revolves around reference photos--about fifty of them. That's the first session. After that the artist selects a few that would plan out well and does some preliminary sketches in paint. Meets with the client. They choose what they like. And the serious painting begins. It ends with one or two life sessions where adjustments are made and finish details filled in.

I wouldn't be apologetic about using a reference photograph. It's the norm. This is a wonderful portrait. Her skin is gorgeous and has the glow of the temperature in the room. This is terrific Hilda. Your usual great work.

  28. thank you so much ROSEMARY for that nice comment! I have a set of pan pastels but use them as an underpainting when I do my barn paintings (which I haven't done in awhile) it covers a lot of area saving my pastels.. I hope you take out your pastels again!! Enjoy your day!!
