Intermission

A few years back, at the Rockville Center Dance Recital, this little girl was resting during an intermission.  She had a sweet face and looked beautiful with her costume.  I decided to paint this in oils....which was a bit challenging since I have a difficult time mixing colors... Basically one of my first oil portraits and I will be practicing with more in the future.  Please feel free to critique!  I'm a big girl...lol

  1. Remarkable that this is your first oil portrait, your a brave girl, Hilda. The eyes and mouth are often the problem, but they are first-class. I'm always impressed with your 'hair' you really understand how it works.

I'm sure the parents would want to buy this from you if you gave them the chance.

Looking forward to the next one now!

    1. Thank you so much John. Yes, the first portrait in oils..maybe my next will be a little easier? lol I did enjoy painting the hair and have to say I love the creaminess in oils and the fact that the oils don't dry fast..so it gives you that chance to change things around...

  4. I was teaching this morning about the eyeball being round and so many do not paint it so it looks that way and along comes this post. This is a wonderful example of a ball in socket. You have nailed the ellipse of the corneas perfectly! Well done. Love everything about her.

  5. Oh Hilda - she is so lovely. You would never know that you struggle with mixing colors because these couldn't be better. The neutral background you used really makes her sweet face come forward. Hope to see more of your oils in the coming year. Hugs!

  9. Wow Hilda. There isn't much wrong with this. You did an extraordinary job. You always do such lovely skin tones and that certainly translated. What color did you use as your shadow color(s)? I think we need to see more oils from you. Lovely.

    Gros bisous

  32. What a nice comment Carol!!! I'm not sure if I'll ever paint another portrait in oil.. And maybe I will...when I need a challenge!...lol. It's been quite a few years since I took this reference photo of this little girl and I have asked my granddaughter if she knew her but she didn't .. I was thinking of taking it to the dance studio to see if anyone recognizes her..I would gladly give it to her...
