This was my beautiful Mother-in-law when she was about 20 years old. I fell in love with the reference picture when I first saw it. It was a black and white photo but I chose to add a little color since she had such beautiful blue eyes. She was born 1900 and my granddaughter Skye was born 2000 - 100 years later sharing the same birthdate... I hope you like this pastel portrait....I enjoyed painting her so much.

Bravo !
Gros bisous à vous.

Your mother-in-law is so beautiful and dignified which you have captured perfectly. She reminds me of a Renaissance painting with the profile and exquisite beauty she possesses.

ReplyDeleteThank you so much MARY! I think I chose the reference picture for the same reason! She looked glamorous to me...glad you liked her.!!
DeleteWhat a twist of fate to have same birthdates, 100 years apart. She is a beauty, elegant and yes glamorous. As usual I love her complexion, such a subtle shadow color.
ReplyDeleteLooked for your email, as I have just finished reading about 8 years of daioy blogs by Karen Margulis, a well known first regional and now national pastelist. She shared her journey to success (practice practice practice) and it was so interesting, but she also shared some great tips. She has worked on sanded papers and now uses non-sanded as well, but to get a subtle tooth she recommended using clear gesso, for whatever reason there is a little grip to it and it works beautifully but doesn't eat up the pastel. You do need to coat the back side with regular gesso to keep it from buckling. I think you blend and she mentioned one of her workshop Terry Ludwig tips was to use pipe insulation. Also, how do you use/sort your pastels, by color or value?
I'm glad you liked this portrait NELVIA!!! I really enjoyed painting it. I have seen Karen Margulis' work and she's truly talented! I've worked on sanded paper many times ...in fact...I'm almost finished with one ..
ReplyDeleteI apply my pastels on the paper and use an alcohol wash as the underpainting then re-apply the pastels.. It has a nice look to it. I've never used gesso but I understand it does give it a better grip to the pastels.
Since I work mainly on pastel portraits, I have my portrait colors in one box ...light to dark ...no real system! LOL Thank you for stopping by and enjoy the rest of the day...
Hilda, todo lo que pintas y relatas son cosas muy emocionantes. Eres muy sensible y eso te ayuda a realizar estas maravillosas obras. Te felicito!
